Manila (Philippines)
Manila, which is also known as Metro Manila, consists of fourteen cities and three municipalities and is home to the seats of government. Spread out over 640 square kilometers and home to 10 million inhabitants, Manila offers an impressive view of magnificent Manila Bay and its stunning sunsets.
Manila is a way-of-life. In order to understand Manila one must understand Manila’s rich history, of conquests, natural disasters, wars and reconstruction. Today this regional economic centre is a never-resting, 24 hr., mega-metropolis. When the young and active Filipino population floods the streets of Manila, roads and busses will soon be filled, but in Manila one learns to go with the flow, never bothering about whether one will be late or whether the taxi driver is going the wrong way down a one-way street. Manila’s motto is: bahala na – what will be will be – and it applies as much to the city as it does to life.
Like a hidden jewel of the past, Intramuros, one of Manila’s beautiful, historic sights, rests much as it was when the Spanish conquistadores left Manila at the middle of the 19th century. Manila’s Chinatown, Binondo, Corregidor or the Pagsanjan waterfalls should not be missed, either. Visitors usually do not forget Manila’s bustling nightlife scene, as local residents never shy away from a good time.
Manila's economy is multi-faceted and the city serves as the nation's principal port. It is the financial and publishing center for the Philippines, a renowned tourist destination, producer of small commodity items and regional economic hub. The widespread use of English gives the city an advantage in international trade not shared by many Asian cities.
